Sundre & Area
Beautifully situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains, on the Red Deer River, Sundre offers a smorgasbord of things to do and see. Whether you camp, stay at one of our hotels, cabins or B&Bs, this is a great place to call home while you explore our town and the amazing “West Country.” Think of us as your own private playground.
If you want to spend every waking moment on one of our area’s three magnificent golf courses, you can do that. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast who wants to do it all in the great outdoors, you can do that, too. Sundre’s the perfect spot for you.
In town, take the time to explore our miles of walkways and trails, either for a casual evening ramble or for a more challenging hike at Snake Hill Recreation Area. Enjoy the salt water pool, with its waterslide, wading pool and fitness club. Take your kids to try out the skate park. Stroll downtown for your favourite latte or ice cream, or to snoop around for used books, antique treasures, locally-made art or pottery, or to gear up for adventure of any kind. Satisfy your inner foodie at one of the local farmers’ markets. Book yourself for a massage or other fabulous spa treatment. Or take your rod down to the river and see if the fish are biting.
Sundre still proudly shows off its farming & ranching roots, too. Our two biggest annual events are the Sundre Pro Rodeo 35th Anniversary Super Celebration in late June and Bulls n’ Wagons in August. The Sundre & District Pioneer Village Museum offers a look into the history of our region, from the arrival of Norwegian and Scottish settlers in the 1890s and on up through the life of our town and district. An unexpected find here at our museum is the Chester Mjolsness World of Wildlife exhibit – a world-class display of over 170 animal mounts from around the globe, representing one local hunter’s lifelong adventures, all set in authentic dioramas.
And what about that backcountry? Heading west less than a halfhour from Sundre gets you to the area we simply call “the West Country” – the doorstep of the Rockies. Once there … well … that world is yours to explore. Outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure junkies of every stripe will find themselves in heaven. You can get out there on your own, or book a guided experience.
And while you’re out there, keep a watch out for the wild horses that make the West Country their home. Find all the info you need at www.sundre.com, or by contacting us at visitor.info@sundre.com.
Our featured adventure tour operator is Otter Rafting, which offers whitewater & kayaking trips on the Upper Red Deer River – some of the best white water you’ll find on this side of the Rockies. With 30 years of guiding experience, owner David Todd is also a potter and his work is inspired by the beauty of the mountains and the river.
